Chapter 4

Saturday evening.

The sounds of sizzling veggies filled the kitchen alongside the familiar and comforting tap, tap, tapping of Royce’s typing. Jack smiled as he minced some garlic. It’d been a good day. Nice. Sunny, neither cold nor warm. They took a walk earlier. Carefully, of course. The new normal. Or however close something could be to normal when it was abruptly so different.

Jack had been making the best of things and worked from home. Weekly meetings over Zoom and conference calls and Royce bent over his desk while he did his very best not to moan too loudly. A thought that brought another smile to Jack’s face.

That smile was chased away when Royce suddenly let out a frustrated cry and slammed the laptop closed. Jack glanced over his shoulder just in time to catch her shove it away.

“What’s the matter?”

“This fucking scene,” Royce grumbled. “I’m never gonna finish it.”

“Not true.” Jack turned off the burner and moved the frying pan. “You’re brilliant. You’re my brilliant writer and you’ll get it done. Brilliantly.”

Royce scoffed. “Say brilliant again.”

First kissing the top of her head, Jack chuckled and started massaging Royce’s shoulders. “Brilliant. So very, very brilliant.”

“Any other adjectives you wanna throw in there?”

“I think brilliant brilliantly sums it up.”

Head rolling from side to side as Jack’s fingers kneaded into her tense muscles, Royce hummed and grinned.

“I suppose it’s a good thing I’m the writer, then.”

“A brilliant one.”

Royce groaned a whine and dropped her head down on the table, pillowing it in her arms. She mumbled something else, but Jack didn’t catch it. Jack resumed rubbing her shoulders.

“I’m not sure what you said,” he told Royce. “But you do know my feelings about you putting yourself down.”

Turning her head to the side enough so that her mouth was no longer muffled, Royce said, “I didn’t.”

“No?”

When Jack leaned over just enough to be over the table, Royce flicked those big brown eyes up to meet his gaze and gave him a little pout.

“Maybe a little.”

Jack clicked his tongue a few times, mocking disappointment. Although he most certainly made it clear that he didn’t want Royce talking negatively about herself, he was also very aware that it happened from time to time. That didn’t mean he wasn’t going to tease Royce about it. Maybe dish out a little funishment because of it.

“I’m sorry, sir,” she said. “Please, don’t punish me.”

“Mmm. You just watch it, little one,” Jack replied, giving Royce a soft bop on the nose with the tip of his finger. “But for now.” Jack scooped Royce to her feet. “For now, we’re taking a break.”

“What?” Royce looked between Jack and computer on the table. “No, I—Jack, I have to get this scene done.”

“Mhm. But you need to take a break otherwise it’s just gonna keep you frustrated.”

“But—”

The quick swat to the ass not only made Royce whimper, it also cut off the rest of whatever her protest would have been. Lip tucked firmly between her teeth, she turned that wickedly submissive look on Jack.
